Let's get this party started
Based on some preliminary survey results, it seems like many grad students dislike the language requirement because it's irrelevant to their field of study. So why not get rid of it? One problem is that programs of our type and caliber still have this requirement, and we would not want to be the first program to eliminate it. How do we resolve this conflict? Are there ways we can adapt the language requirement to better align with the scholarly work we do?

Welcome to KSU Graduate English Students blog
Hey Everyone,
We at AGES (Association for Graduate English Students) thought it would be helpful to have a forum in which we can discuss various issues that concern graduate students in our department. We created this blog so that we'd have a place to share ideas.
Currently, everyone is taking the survey that asks for your opinions on the department's language requirement. Based on everyone's interesting responses, we thought it would be helpful to have an additional side conversation where we can share ideas, prompt each other for clarification, give feedback, and come to some conclusions about where we stand on this issue as a student body. [Survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CGKN5JC.] Please see the AGES Facebook group page and/or your e-mail for the password.
Discourse, we know, can promote social action and enact change; this site can be part of a grassroots effort where ideas can germinate and potentially produce fruit. Hopefully this site also can become a place where discussion fosters community building within the department and among programs. Please use it however you want: discuss issues of concern to students (e.g. language requirement); generate reading/writing groups; continue academic discussions with one another; ask and answer questions about navigating the program, etc. The possibilities are endless, and the site is yours -- please use it as you see fit.
